Matt Sellick is a Canadian guitarist and composer from Thunder Bay, Canada, a small city on the north shore of Lake Superior. Although initially educated in classical performance and composition, Matt has spent the last fifteen years studying flamenco and building a career as a solo guitarist.

After completing an HBMus at Lakehead University in 2013, and studying extensively in Spain with some of the world’s greatest flamenco guitarists, Matt performed regularly in Thunder Bay for six years. There, Matt is best known for his solo shows, and for his performances as a soloist with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra and Consortium Aurora Borealis.

With funding from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts, Matt has produced five albums of his original guitar music. These include North Shore, for which he travelled six hundred kilometres to visit, compose, and record in all the shoreline provincial and national parks between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie. Matt released this album in 2019, just before moving to Toronto to pursue his solo career and tour internationally with Canadian guitarist Jesse Cook. In Jesse’s band, Matt has performed across Canada, in over twenty U.S. states, and in eight European countries.

Matt has personally orchestrated much of his original repertoire, and performed to multiple sold-out audiences accompanied by the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. The reception for these concerts over the last decade inspired Matt to record the arrangements; the album is called Watching the Sky and will be released in June 2025.

Matt’s music is a mix of contrasting inspirations. It tends to draw on the moods of specific landscapes, lakes, and streets; for example, the south of Spain where he studied flamenco, and the shoreline of Lake Superior he calls home.

When not on tour, Matt works in Toronto, where he has lived since 2019. He performs as the soloist of his own small ensemble, but often joins other groups – such as Ventanas and Kuné – and accompanies other flamenco artists in the city.
